When a segment of time is done Jet lag and traces Of wasted un-wanting Undone She came on like a loaded gun Pliant reclining She was bent on defining The ways that we all should live Missing the moment With jumbled perceptions And mangling the mentalist trip She’s a victim of one-on-one She won’t go down with the ship Or the captain No fun Hair undone understated She was cleanly inflated It was just what I’d waited Forgetting the Midas touch Missing the moment With golden intentions And mangling the mentalist trip So certain perception will make them wise So knowing all action is paralyzed She’s hiding away on a world of fear They’ve gone on this way for too many years They’re watching their lives Through the eyes of strangers When a segment in time is done Jet lag and traces Of wasted un-wanting

It’s a red letter day for the fools They’ve got a good thing going Got a bite of the party balloon Those cats are really blowing The joint is jumping Everyone’s getting high I ask myself is this for me Are these guys on my side? I ask myself these questions But the answer’s hard to find It’s a fine night to bay at the moon The stars are really cooking Got the right to behave like a loon Depends on where you’re looking The pipes are pumping Everything’s working fine Get up you jerk report for work You’re number 99 I sign their piece of paper But the signature’s not mine Gonna work it out Shake it on out Move it all around Take it on out Gonna work it out Shake it on out Move it all around Take it on out I rev my little engine And start to climb The coast is clear my dreams appear Like flowers in the night They shut their tiny petals And they tremble with delight It’s a fine night to bay at the moon Cause it’s a red letter day for the fools

Three old men Leaning on a lamp post Taking their time To shine their shoes Well there’s nobody there To tell their troubles too Elderly stranger Reading his paper news I remember Warm summer nights Living easy Home is where the heart is Any place I hang my hat Anywhere I hang my hat Any place I hang my hat Is close enough to home You’ve gone dry And it’s wrinkling your shoulders Slurring your speech You’re growing old my chosen son And now all of your dreams Have blown to kingdom come Elderly stranger Life and death are one I remember Warm summer nights Living easy Home is where the heart is Any place I hang my hat Anywhere I hang my hat Any place I hang my hat Is close enough to home

Hey Girl 03:30
Daddy was a heartless pretender Empty unfeeling unknown Beat your momma down Like a hammer Just wouldn’t leave her alone She’d hold you and cry out a story So broken and bitter with pain She said, “Child give your heart out to no one. No one.” But hey girl You don’t have to work it that way, girl You’ve got to live in today, girl Somebody’s waiting for you Learned your lesson well, sadder story No one would take you alive Give the fellas hell In your glory Love that can cut like a knife You stare at a face in the mirror Unbroken, unfeeling unknown You’re alone with a heart Meant for no one. No one But hey girl You don’t have to work it that way, girl You’ve got to live in today, girl Somebody’s waiting for you You’ve got the shoes and the hat But you ain’t got no heart Breaking the circle of pain is a start You stare at a face in the mirror Unbroken, unfeeling unknown You’re alone with a heart Meant for no one. No one But hey girl You don’t have to work it that way, girl You’ve got to live in today, girl Somebody’s waiting Hey girl, somebody’s waiting Hey girl, somebody’s waiting for you

Love is a moment with you Simple moments for two Such an endless surprise When I look in your eyes I’m so grateful we met Now I almost forget All the tears that I cried Now you’re here, by my side Long waiting. So lonely She’s loving me only now She’s coming She’s coming on Hot loving. No lies One happy surprise She’s coming She’s coming on Love is a game that we play It can take you away Bring you down get you high Make you laugh make you cry You can drive her away Or you can ask her to stay In the end you will find That it’s all in your mind Repeat Chorus

Young Thing 03:58
You’ve been looking For a place to play I’ve been looking too If I take you For a little ride Whatcha gonna do? Darlin’ darlin’ Open up your heart No one’s gonna know When your love has Nothing left to hide You will feel it grow Sweet confection Devil in her eyes Knows she’s looking fine Skin tight, catlike Moving on the floor Got to make her mine Darlin’ darlin’ Can’t you hear me call? Drop your foolish pride I can show you Things you never thought of Touch you deep inside Darlin’ darlin’ Can’t you hear me call? No one’s gonna know When your love has Nothing left to hide You will feel it grow

Lady Be Mine 03:38
Guess we’d better stack our wishes Make it clear once and for all I do believe you’re not one For hurting me Glad to know You’re just like I had Pictured you to be You’re sending rushes Up and down my spine Lady lady lady lady be mine And think of how happy we could be Lazy days and tender evenings But don’t let me sway you Think it out rationally Sing a line take your time Don’t you get fretty Think it out that’s why we’re here Sweet sweet presents Ready for opening Even though yester-love Was sad as it could be I just can’t see me hiding from the light Lady light a candle in the heart of the night And think of the magic when we touch Am I asking very much? But don’t let me sway you Think it out rationally Glad to know You’re just like I had Pictured you to be You’re sending rushes Up and down my spine And think of the magic when we touch Am I asking very much? But don’t let me sway you Think it out rationally

What’s your conviction? And who are you buying? Do you think the world’s a meaningless space? Is your karma in a terrible place? Once so high Down so low Who are you fooling? You’re homeless and hungry You’re a stranger to reality’s ways We’ve been hoping that it’s only a phase Such a long way to go Through your trials and tribulations You can have a key to your life Yours can be the hand on the knife You won’t live a world of worry and strife Baba is waiting go bye-bye Baba say bye-bye Creepies and crawlies They circle around you And hound you to relax and relate Take a journey to their corner of fate Where the Gods never go Through your trials and tribulations You can have a key to your life Yours can be the hand on the knife You won’t live a world of worry and strife Baba is waiting go bye-bye Baba say bye-bye

He began to fall apart It was the way the whole thing started Now he’s got a reason Playing out his sorrows To the crowd in the dark Music is in season But what will he do? What will he say? When this temporary answer runs away As the time goes so do changes His music faltered while his spirit hastened Fill the hole with Jesus There is nothing lacking in a Child of the Lord Missionary heathen But what will he do? What will he say? When this temporary answer runs away There is only one thing that I’m sure of In this world Never take an answer for a friend Because friends they change In time you’ll wake up Play the fool You can only laugh at where you’ve been You’ve been nowhere Where’ve you been? You’ve been nowhere He began to fall apart Listen to him crying for a woman to heal him Love must be the reason Life could be a breeze If he could only get in Someone to believe in But what will he do? What will he say? When this temporary answer goes away There is only one thing that I’m sure of In this this world Never take an answer for a friend Because, friends they change In time you’ll wake up Play the fool You can only laugh at where you’ve been You’ve been nowhere Where’ve you been? You’ve been nowhere He began to fall apart It was the way the whole thing started Now he’s got a reason Now he’s got the reason to live Now he’s got a reason But what will he do? What will he say? When this temporary answer runs away

What do you say When the girl’s gone away? Do you stand there A pillar of pride? Foolish at best You’re obsessed with success You’re a mess You’ve got so much to hide Over at last Thought she’d never catch on In the fantasy past That you’re building upon Can’t you see love is gone? Love is gone He lives alone in the room upstairs Always alone in the room upstairs Nothing unique He’s your average freak There’s just something not there In his eyes Alone in his head He is dead Coldly knowing Untouchable icicle I Ivory towers Are guarded so fast No one ever gets through You’ve got no one at last Can’t you see love is past? Love is past He lives alone in the room upstairs Always alone in the room upstairs

Better get up clock Face the new day In the same way Pick up the pace get a race on Back on the phone rings He’s a fat cat He’s a pack rat He’s getting close to a dose of Crazy shopping Feels so fine Crazy shopping Standing on the grocery line Running from work No time to waste Reaching for that second taste Love and money Pain and power Back in the rat race Profits are down It’s a tough town You’d better break for a coffee cake Grabbing the brass ring Maybe it’s fate When you checkmate You’re gonna pay for it anyway Crazy shopping Feels so fine Crazy shopping Standing on the grocery line After lunch no time to waste Reaching for that second taste Love and money Pain and power Check out line’s too slow I’ve got eight items or less I’ve got the right to confess My deepest wish Seeking that ultimate dish Running from work No time to waste Streaking towards that heavy date Love and money Pain and power Back in the sack race She’s a cool breeze She’s a cruel tease She’ll get away if you hesitate Better get up clock Face the new day In the same way Whatcha gonna do? Crazy shopping Feels so fine Crazy shopping Standing on the grocery line

about

Give Me Libretto or Give Me Death
----------------------------------------------
Welcome to Crazy Shopping!

I wrote and recorded these songs between 1971 and 1978 . Back then, my songwriting process was akin to automatic writing, tapping into an emotion and then getting out of the way to let my unconscious mind do its thing. Sometimes, I had no idea what my lyrics meant until later, which could be unexpectedly embarrassing. A song I wrote called, "My First Ship," turned out to be a paean to oedipal loss, not the tongue-in-cheek love ballad for a spaceship I had imagined.

Crazy Shopping is a collection of songs about people who watch their lives through the eyes of strangers, who spend too much time alone in the room upstairs, who long to light a candle in the heart of the night but are too distrustful and easily hurt. Okay, I admit it. The songs were about me in my ‘20s. What did you expect? Hopefully, they're also about you too and also your friends and your Uncle Charlie and his dog Poochie. Especially Poochie.

Originally, I was going to use The Mangled Membrane as the name of my fictional one-man band. I had several explanations for this. First, a membrane makes it possible to convert one kind of energy into another, like the capsule of a microphone or the drums within your ears. I also thought there was something at once absurd and disturbing about something so precise and delicate as a membrane juxtaposed with a crude and brutal concept like mangling. I would go on to say this was a reasonably apt metaphor for what we all experience as we make our ways through life; striving to strike a balance between remaining open and receptive and protecting ourselves and those we love. Letting some things in, keeping others out. Like a membrane.

Of course, this was mostly a load of bunk. The real explanation is less pretentious. I considered this my first “real” album and alluded to this in terms of a girl losing her virginity. It strikes me today as an odd way to communicate this notion. I was not a girl, so why was I framing my debut in terms of being deflowered? And why use a violent word like mangling to describe the process? Decades later, I prefer not to speculate.

In 2007, when I wrote the first version of these liner notes, I concluded my crap explanations with the following paragraph. In honor of the callow me of the late ‘70s, I’ll end with the same words again.

Are these explanations satisfactory? I suspect not. They seemed to make a lot more sense when they came to me in the room upstairs. Still, I hope you’ll come up and visit me there, at least long enough to listen to this CD. Each song is quite different from the others, so if one offends, perhaps another will please; passing through your own membrane to deliver some of the joy and satisfaction I experienced while writing and recording Crazy Shopping. And now, on to the songs.

about

Eric & The Wabe Phoenix, Arizona

I started writing songs in 1969 and continued until 1987, when I got married and had kids. In 2008 I returned to music and started writing songs and collaborating with musicians across the Web, most notably Amos Clarke, Alex Klidaras, and John Tabacco. I owe a debt of gratitude to them and to the many other musicians who have kindly provided me with tracks and encouragement since then. ... more
